The cottage is located in the village of Tyninghame , a picturesque planned estate village 40km east of Edinburgh in East Lothian, Scotland . It lies at the junction of the B1407 and the A198 and is very easily reached from the A1 by car. The village is very peaceful with no pubs or shops except a lovely coffee/gift shop serving a range of coffees and teas, light meals, home baking and the wonderful Lucas ice-cream. The seaside towns of Dunbar and North Berwick are 15 minutes drive away and the county town of Haddington is 7km to the west. There is a Farmers' Market there on the last Saturday of every month.

The village of East Linton is 3 km away and is an easy walk along a quiet road or can be reached by car or local bus. East Linton has a small supermarket, baker's and butcher's shops, newsagent, post office, bank, cash machine, 3 pubs, a restaurant, hairdresser and beauty salon, pharmacy and a doctor's surgery. You can buy fine cheeses, ham, salami, bread, wine and other good things at the delicatessen on the high street or ask them to make up rolls or sandwiches from your selection for a picnic. Another great local food shop is Knowes Farm Shop, off the A198 just south of Tyninghame and less than a kilometre from the cottage. Specialities include fresh free range eggs (you'll see the hens), locally grown vegetables and herbs, home-cooked ready meals, smoked salmon, bacon, sausages, fresh chicken, fruit, jams, home baking, bird seed and nuts.

There are train services to Edinburgh from Dunbar, via the east coast main line, and local train services from North Berwick and Drem. There is ample car parking at all three stations. Edinburgh International Airport is only 50 minutes drive and Glasgow airport is 130 km. There is a ferry service from Zeebrugge to Rosyth which is 13 km from Edinburgh . Local bus services are available from Tyninghame to all the local towns and villages and Edinburgh.
