East Lothian offers a wide range of activities from angling to scuba diving, pony trekking to tennis. Its association with the game of golf goes back to at least 1672. Muirfield is the county's best-known course and the epitome of a Scottish links course. However there are 18 other terrific courses open to the public. Cycling is popular and a great way to get fit especially over the hills around East Lothian . There are several designated cycle routes in the county.
Windsurfers head for the beach at Gullane Bents while North Berwick 's rock pools and sandy beaches will keep the younger kids happy for hours. Children 12 and under go free at the Museum of Flight at East Fortune airfield where Concorde takes pride of place. Edinburgh Zoo and the Royal Botanic Garden are both only an hour away and well worth a day's visit.
As Europe's festival capital, Edinburgh knows how to party and two of the major attractions are the Edinburgh International Festival in August and Edinburgh 's Hogmanay Celebrations at New Year. Edinburgh has a vibrant social scene, wonderful shops and an amazing variety of restaurants and cafes.
